Store Hopes To Sell Jackpot Ticket Again

November 28, 2012, 6:04 PM by Erich Schaffhauser

Store Hopes To Sell Jackpot Ticket Again
WATERTOWN, SD -

While people are flocking to buy Powerball tickets, one store in Watertown is hoping to hit it big twice.

The Powerball jackpot went up again Wednesday to an estimated $550 million. The Cowboy Country Store along U.S. Highway 212 in Watertown sold a jackpot winning ticket almost ten years ago.

"Keep my fingers crossed all day," Laura Nelson said.

Nelson and her friends stopped by to pick up some tickets quick before returning to school Wednesday. They didn't realize the history the store has had with lottery winners.

Not only did it sell the state's first jackpot winning ticket in 2003, it sold a $200,000 winner in 2007.

"We're ready to win again so we're kind of planning on it tonight," store manager Wayne Fiebelkorn said.

Or at least that's what Fiebelkorn hopes. Previous wins brought the store a lot of attention. And several in town hope it gets attention again.

In the first six hours on Wednesday, clerks in the store had already sold three times the number of tickets they would on an average Wednesday.

Management isn't sure how high those sales numbers will grow. More than that number, Nelson and her friends are thinking of the millions they could have to their names.

"It makes me nervous to think about that," Coty Zell said.

They may not have known about this store's winning past when they bought tickets. But they'll never forget if it can score another jackpot sale courtesy of their tickets.

The jackpot ticket from the Watertown store in 2003 went to a pool of more than 30 people, and they had to split the money with another winning ticket. So each person came away with a little more than $500,000.

But at least one of those winners returned to that same store Wednesday trying for his shot at winning millions.
