Stock Dog To Help Raise Money For Make-A-Wish

August 27, 2014, 6:15 PM by Erich Schaffhauser

Stock Dog To Help Raise Money For Make-A-Wish

A herding dog can be a huge help around the farm. A dog at the South Dakota State Fair this year will help kids' wishes come true as well.

Kelly Jackson is a member of the South Dakota Stock Dog Association.

"We decided to incorporate our passion with making kids' wishes come true," Kelly Jackson said.

At the South Dakota State Fair this year, people can watch trained dogs compete to herd sheep through different obstacles. The competition is free to watch but organizers hope people will open their wallets to help the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

A Nebraska man who had a young family member benefit from Make-A-Wish donated a Border Collie dog to auction off, with proceeds going to the foundation. South Dakota Stock Dog Association president Tim Naasz says it was a big donation.

"If you're thinking about using a dog on the farm, this would be a good dog to use. He's fully trained. And there's different levels of dogs; this in an excellent dog," Naasz said.

This is the association's second year running the fundraiser. Last year's auction raised more than $7,000 for Make-A-Wish.

Organizers aren't sure what to expect this year but hope it's a large amount again. They're also hoping to promote the use of dogs on farms and ranches across South Dakota.

"We would really like it for the public to come out and support our cause," Jackson said.

The auction is Thursday at 5 p.m.
