A woman known by many as the Grand Dame of Sioux Falls will now have her name on a downtown institution.
The State Theatre will be called the Sylvia R. Henkin State Theatre.
Sylvia Henkin became a celebrity on local radio and television after marrying Sioux Falls broadcaster Mort Henkin in 1944. The Henkin Family started KSOO Radio in 1926 and KSOO-TV in 1960. In 1974, Henkin took over both the radio and television stations after her husband passed away.
She's served on numerous boards and is the driving force behind the annual St. Patrick's Day Parade in Sioux Falls.
The theatre opened in 1926 but closed in 1991 when the conditions deteriorated. Ten years later, the Sioux Falls Film Society bought the building for $300,000, beginning an eleven-year renovation and revival campaign.
