Governor Dennis Daugaard has asked FEMA for a joint preliminary damage assessment for the cost of damages to public infrastructure from the storms in June.
The assessment starts on June 14 and lasts three days. Representatives from FEMA, Emergency Management and local governments will join as assessment teams. Those teams will visit Butte, Clay, Corson, Dewey, Hanson, Jerauld, Lincoln, Minnehaha, Perkins, Turner, Union and Zieback counties.
The teams gather estimates of costs of the damage to state, cities, counties, and tribes, private and non-profit organizations. Damage to highways and roads will be a significant part of the cost.
The assessment will gather only the damage done to public infrastructure. It is not a guarantee that federal assistance will be given.
