State Asking People To Say 'HiFromSD'

July 4, 2014, 6:00 PM by Erich Schaffhauser

State Asking People To Say 'HiFromSD'
ABERDEEN, SD -

Spring and early summer weather could have prevented some places from getting a jump start to the travel season, but it might not have slowed traffic either according to the South Dakota Department of Tourism.

Some places in the state are seeing stronger visitor numbers this year than the same time last year. The tourism department has also launched a new social media campaign which has shown some success so far.

With the number of golfers up this year and a full campground every weekend, Fisher Grove State Park in Spink County has started the summer travel season strong. If you ask campground host Craig Claassun, that'll continue.

"I would say that anybody that comes to South Dakota once will indeed come back because it's a beautiful place," Claassun said.

Claassun and his wife visit many places with their camper and say they're impressed with the options South Dakota offers.

The tourism department is working to spread that message too. It's promoting a social media campaign, asking people to share their South Dakota experience by using the hashtag #HiFromSD when they take pictures and video.

"We use it in all our social media," Casey Weismantel said.

Weismantel works for the Aberdeen Convention & Visitors Bureau. He also adds to those pictures hashtags specifically promoting the northeast part of the state.

You can see pictures people have taken through the tourism department's website. Officials hope viewers from all over see something that might turn them into visitors.

Weismantel is rooting for travel plans to the northeast.

"We've already seen some fishing photos come through. Fourth of July obviously, with it being Fourth of July, we're going to see a lot from there as well," Weismantel said.

Back at Fisher Grove State Park, Claassun isn't sure he could explain what hashtag means much less participate in the campaign himself. That said, he's all for it.

"If people come to camp because of that, it will still contribute to the local economy, I think it's great," Claassun said.

Numbers from the tourism department show it's ‘#HiFromSD’ could have been viewed about 1.7 million times on twitter within a month and a half, and that's just one form of social media.
