One program teaching fifth graders the importance of STEM classes is on the chopping block.
STARBASE is a national program that teaches science, technology, engineering and math to fifth graders. The program has been in South Dakota for the past two decades.
An amendment has been proposed by Senator John McCain that will eliminate the funding of the program. And South Dakota students will feel the effect of the cut. More than 3,500 students attend the program every year.
