MARION, SD -
As of 5 p.m. on Monday night, the standoff in the small South Dakota town of Marion approached hour eight.
Police have been on the scene since 9 a.m. Monday morning; that includes the Turner County Sheriff’s office, Sioux Falls police, DCI and many more. They have set up a mobile command post near the house that the suspect is staying in.
Throughout much of the day, the status of the standoff remained the same.
Turner County Sheriff Byron Nogelmeier says the suspect held up his grandmother’s home Monday morning, taking his grandmother and a teenage relative hostage.
The grandmother was let go earlier on Monday. For much of the afternoon, authorities worked to get the teen out of the house and get this situation resolved as peacefully as they can.
Later in the afternoon, the teenager was released from the home. The suspect still remains inside, however.
Police brought lights in near the scene. That could mean they are planning to be on the scene for the long haul.
Authorities say this could be a very dangerous situation. They believe the suspect is armed and dangerous.
Police have a large potion of the street near the home blocked off. They have also been trying to keep traffic under control in town.
