Stampede Fall 2-1 At Home

January 18, 2014, 10:50 PM

Stampede Fall 2-1 At Home
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

The Sioux Falls Stampede home woes continued Saturday night as they dropped a 2-1 heartbreaker to the Des Moines Buccaneers in front of large crowd of 4,553 at the Sioux Falls Arena. The loss kept the Herd winless in home in their last six games (0-5-1) and dropped them to 21-12-3 on the season and three points behind Sioux City for third place in the West. Tony Calderone tallied the only goal while Art Brey stopped 22 shots, but took the loss in goal.

After a back-and-forth start to the game, the Bucs broke through at 16:29 of the first period when Oskar Norlov tallied his first goal of the season. The Bucs broke into the Stampede zone on a 3-on-2 and cashed in when Norlov one-timed a pass in the left circle just underneath the crossbar to give Des Moines a 1-0 edge. Sioux Falls outshot the Bucs 10-9 in the first.

Norlov struck again in the second period when he took a pass from Ryan Galt inside the left circle and wristed a shot through traffic that floated under the left arm of Stampede netminder Art Brey and gave the Bucs a 2-0 edge. The Herd posted 14 shots in the period, but nothing would go past the Buccaneers netminder, Ryan Ruck.

The Herd finally broke through 4:46 into the third period when Tony Calderone tallied his 11th goal of the season. Keith Burchett sent a pass inside the left circle to Calderone who wristed a shot past the stick side of Ruck and brought all 4,553 faithful to their feet as it brought the Herd within in a goal. It also marked the Stampede’s first goal in over five periods dating back to the night before in which they were blanked by Sioux City.

The Stampede responded to the goal, putting up 12 total shots in the period, but the puck would not bounce the Herd’s way. Sioux Falls pulled Brey in the final minute and had a flurry in front of the Bucs net, but the puck bounced wide on each attempt and a last scramble of shots were blocked by the Des Moines defense to preserve the victory.

Sioux Falls finished the night 0-for-3 on the power play while going 3-for-3 on the penalty kill and outshot the Bucs 36-24 on the night.

The Herd will look to get back into the win column this weekend when they travel to Kearney, Neb. to take on the Tri-City Storm, Friday and Saturday night. Game time on Friday is 7:30 and fans can listen live on KELO News Talk 1320-AM, 107.9-FM and online at www.kelo.com starting at 7 PM. The Herd return home on January 31st for Thomas Vanek Night. The first 500 fans through the doors will receive a FREE Thomas Vanek bobblehead from his days in Sioux Falls. Tickets are available at the Sioux Falls Arena Box Office or any Ticketmaster location.
