SIOUX FALLS, SD -
Thursday is Pope Francis' first full day on the job as leader of the Roman Catholic Church. He comes to the position from Argentina as Cardinal Archbishop Jorge Mario Bergoglio.
Spanish speaking Catholics in KELOLAND are excited about the new pope. A majority of the masses at Our Lady of Guadalupe in Sioux Falls are conducted in Spanish and many of the churches parishioners are excited about Pope Francis' Hispanic heritage.
“I think it really gives them a sense of pride. Just as much if we, U.S. citizens had Cardinal Doland or Cardinal O'Malley. We would associate. We would have an affinity with the cardinal that became pope,” Father Wachs said.
Another history making note is that Pope Francis is the first one to come from the Americas.
Father Wachs explains more about Pope Francis' responsibilities in unifying all Roman Catholics, regardless of their native tongue or country of origin coming up tonight on KELOLAND News.
