South Dakota's Survivor

August 9, 2010, 5:56 PM by Austin Hoffman

South Dakota's Survivor
They do their best to outwit, outlast and outplay.

We now know who will be competing for one million dollars on the next season of CBS's "Survivor" in Nicaragua, and one of them is from our own backyard.

She's a mother of three, a swim coach, a devoted wife and now she's a "Survivor."

“Well last year, about this time I decided I wanted a personal challenge. My husband and I, I've stayed home with all my kids, raised my family, started a swim team, volunteered 16 years of my life coaching a swim team. So basically I decided I wanted to do something for me," contestant Holly Hoffman of Eureka said.

Holly left on her journey to Nicaragua for the hit show "Survivor" quite some time ago, leaving her family for nearly two months.

"I've never been away from my husband for more than four days. I talk to my kids every day," Holly said.

I know first hand how hard it was for Holly to leave her family because to me, she's known as mom.

“I'm pretty tough.  I help my husband on our ranch in north central South Dakota so I would consider myself pretty tough, thick skinned," Holly said.

Knowing from experience, tough is an understatement. Strategy is also something that plays a large role on "Survivor."

"I have a sense of reading people and I'm going to go with my gut feeling on every decision I make," Holly said.

As for my mother's biggest concerns going into the game?

"Maybe, um, sleeping in the hut.  That is going to be the hardest thing for me.  Sleeping at night with everybody in the hut.  Just the experience alone, just being here, going through the whole process.  It's wonderful that is what I look forward to the most," Holly said.

Talking with my mom since she's returned from Nicaragua, she said she knew it wasn't going to be easy but this was by far the hardest thing she has ever done. But for now, she can't say much more than that.  We have to wait to get approval by CBS to interview her.

The 21st season of Survivor begins September 15 and will air right here on KELO-TV.
