South Dakota Peach Festival Comes To Sioux Falls

July 25, 2014, 8:10 AM by Kathleen Serie

South Dakota Peach Festival Comes To Sioux Falls
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

The summer months are known for many long-standing festivals, like Jazz Fest and Hot Harley Nights. But this year, there's a new event coming to Sioux Falls. The first-ever South Dakota Peach Festival will take place this weekend at the west end of Yankton Trail Park.

With truckloads of peaches making a trip all the way from Georgia, this free festival is centered around a baking contest, canning demonstrations, live music, and food and shopping vendors.

"So, a lot to see and do, and eat," Fruit Club Vice President Lynn Albers said.

Even though a recent recall on peaches from California might raise safety concerns for some people, Albers says there's no concern of listeria with the fruit they'll be selling.

"Our peaches come from Georgia, and they are hand-picked at the orchard and packed at that same orchard. So we have no connection with that whatsoever, there's nothing to worry about with our peaches, they're totally safe," Albers said.

And there's going to be a lot of them at this event. The world's largest peach cobbler is making an appearance, taking up the size of an average parking space, and feeding over 2,000 people. That's not the only type of peach food being offered.

"We will have everything from peach salsa to peach barbeque sauce, peach ice cream, fried peaches, peach beer," Albers said.

The festival will also sell fresh peaches with a portion of those sales going to Special Olympics South Dakota, and their efforts to build a new facility. The minimum donation is $10,000.

"It's tremendous. As a nonprofit, for someone to approach you and donate that size of an amount, it's just a very neat contribution, very supportive, and we appreciate it a lot," Special Olympics South Dakota President, CEO Darryl Nordquist said.

With over 2,000 orders already in place from people in the Sioux Falls area, the organization is well on its way to meeting their goal.

The South Dakota Peach Festival will start up on Saturday from 8:30 in the morning until ten at night, and Sunday from 11 in the morning until five at night. For more information, visit the festival's website.
