South Dakota Firework Sales Sluggish So Far

December 29, 2012, 10:15 PM by Stephanie Gregory

South Dakota Firework Sales Sluggish So Far
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

This is the second year the state of South Dakota is allowing folks to shoot off pyrotechnics, but according to one firework stand sales aren't blowing up yet.

Between bottle rockets, sparklers, and roman candles, the Rushmore State is ringing the New Year in with an explosion.

After a slow year in 2012, firework stands across the state are hoping to see more customers come into their shops to get that bang for their buck.

"It's been a slow trickle of customers, but it will pick up as we get to the holiday," said owner of Pyro City Kevin Lorenzen.

Many people are getting into the new tradition, one man and his son say they can't wait to shoot off fireworks this year.

"We're going to buy some fireworks and ring in the New Year," said Todd Resmen, "something that Riley looks forward to, he likes to shoot off fireworks so we just have to wait six months for next time."

With the fireworks blazing, fire officials across the state say to use extra caution even if there is snow on the ground, they say, some areas of South Dakota are still very dry.

Lorenzen agrees, he says, there is one thing to remember when shooting off fireworks, use common sense.

"Read the labels, make sure you're using it as attended and by all means, when your shopping for fireworks ask the staff what they would recommend and they will gladly help you out," Lorenzen said.

No matter where you are, the rules to shoot off vary everywhere you go.

"Every state has different laws as well as towns, so when you’re shooting make sure to check your local ordinances to make sure that you’re shooting in the proper place," Lorenzen said.
