South Dakota Drought Grows

July 12, 2012, 6:01 PM by Ben Cathey

South Dakota Drought Grows

New information coming into the Storm Center shows drought conditions not only pushing deeper into KELOLAND, but deepening in areas already affected.

All of South Dakota and Iowa now fall into some sort of drought category. Grant, Deuel, Codington and Hamlin Counties are now 'abnormally dry.'  'Severe' drought has now spread farther into western South Dakota.

Browning crops may be the most visible sign of this drought, but rivers are also receding.  River gauges across our region show plummeting flow.

The headwaters of the Big Sioux north of Watertown are down to a trickle and the drought is to blame.  Just a month ago, the same site was above normal flow.

Downstream, the Big Sioux's drop is becoming more noticeable.  Though there is rain in the forecast, plants and basins won't get their fill.

For much more on the topic, tune into this weekend's edition of Inside KELOLAND Sunday night following the 10 p.m. news.
