South Dakota Communities Help Tornado Victims

June 14, 2013, 5:58 PM by Erich Schaffhauser

South Dakota Communities Help Tornado Victims
FAULKTON, SD -

Several small communities in northeast South Dakota have teamed up with a CDL-holding hair dresser from Faulkton to help tornado victims in Oklahoma.

"I just felt really helpless and I just couldn't even imagine waking up to nothing, absolutely nothing," Sarah Davidson said.

So, the Faulkton hair dresser contacted an Oklahoma church. She and her friends collected items the church needed for people in Moore, Oklahoma. Davidson and others inspected the donations and the Class A CDL holder borrowed a truck and trailer to make the delivery. The effort started with a small sign hanging on Davidson's shop. It grew quickly from there.

"And the next thing you know, Hoven called me. They were really interested. They heard that I was doing that and Ipswich and Cresbard," Davidson said.

Others from Faulkton participated, along with people form Aberdeen and Huron. Before long, Davidson was overwhelmed with donations.

"I couldn't even get in the door of my shop. I actually wanted to sit down and cry because I didn't know where to start," Davidson said.

She and other volunteers got the work done and items are on the way to those who need them, courtesy of some small communities whose names the recipients have likely never heard.

"It was just really neat; small towns seem to do that fast and efficiently and want to help," Davidson said.

That help will continue once the truck reaches its destination. Davidson and another hair dresser plan to cut hair when the get to Oklahoma too.

The volunteers will be in Oklahoma for the weekend before getting back. Four women from Faulkton and Cresbard are on the trip.
