South Dakota Beekeepers Meeting In Aberdeen

South Dakota Beekeepers Meeting In Aberdeen
ABERDEEN, SD -

South Dakota beekeepers have been gathering in Aberdeen to discuss solutions and innovations within the industry.

The South Dakota Beekeepers Association annual meeting on Friday and Saturday addressed industry challenges such as colony collapse disorder and issues with insecticides.

Association president John Stolle says the annual meeting is a good communication mechanism that allows ideas from different parts of the state and country to be exchanged.

South Dakota ranks third in the nation in honey production, with more than 14 million pounds produced in 2013.

Natural Resources Conservation Service biologist Kevin Lubke says the beekeeping industry expands far beyond honey production. He says plants, such as cucumbers, squash and strawberries are affected by honeybee pollination.
