Some Welcome Cooler Temperatures, Snow

December 7, 2012, 9:45 PM

Some Welcome Cooler Temperatures, Snow
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

It's not the snow that's good news for Sioux Falls slopes, it's the temperatures the falling flakes bring.

Great Bear Recreation Park officials plan to begin making snow Friday night.

They'll keep doing it 24 hours a day until these slopes are all white.

Mother nature is helping, but Friday's accumulations won't cover the hill by themselves. Officials say the snow cover helps because it keeps temperatures down, which is the most important thing to keep the snow the park makes.

“ What we're looking for right now is to go 24 hours a day. That's really when we get a lot of snow on the ground in a hurry. We're looking for single digit temperatures below the 20s. That's perfect for us,” Great Bear General Manager Dan Grider said.

And Great Bear isn't the only place trying to hurry winter along.

Sioux Falls city crews turned on the sprinklers at Frank Olson Park. That’s because in a matter of days, a frozen ice rink will be there and at all six of the City's outdoor ice rinks.

They are tentatively set to open on December 14.

And by Friday afternoon, snow was also covering the sledding hill at Tuthill park, but so far only the animals were enjoying the white blanket on the ground.
