Snowmobilers in the Black Hills can officially hit the trails beginning Sunday, but trail officials are hoping for more snow.
Although trails open out west December 15, officials say they will need more snow in order to groom the area.
Black Hills Trails District Supervisor Shannon Percy says the area hasn’t had a lot of snow since the October blizzard, so his crews can’t get out to groom the trails until they get more.
The blizzard also left much of the trail system blocked with downed trees, but Percy says crews cleared all 350 miles of the trails. He does warn, however, some hazards still remain off the trails.
Trails in eastern South Dakota opened at the beginning of the month and while there was significant snow in some places, bare spots still remain in others.
