Snow Creates Slippery Road Conditions Across SD

Snow Creates Slippery Road Conditions Across SD
East of Harrold, US 14

SIOUX FALLS, SD -

Snow is already coming down in parts of South Dakota and more is expected throughout the day on Friday.

Early Friday, roads in western South Dakota were reported to have snow and ice on them, causing slippery conditions.  Those same conditions are now spreading to the east, to the Pierre and Aberdeen areas.

It's shaping up to be one of the first decent snowfalls of the year.  And with little to snow last year, many of you might be a little rusty when it comes to winter driving.

One of the easiest ways to stay safe behind the wheel is simply slow down.

Another thing to always keep in mind is defensive driving.  Give yourself some space between you and the car in front of you and start slowing down at intersections long before you normally would so you don't slide into the intersection.

Always watch people around you, also. If someone starts sliding around, make sure you can safely get away from them.

Most experts say it all comes down to not over-driving road conditions and slowing down.

If you are going to be traveling during the snow, you will want to make sure to bring a few extra items along.  Extra blankets, gloves, warm hats, boots, a flashlight, water, some granola bars or something to eat, and a shovel are recommended in case you run into problems while on the road.
