Snow Creates Slick Road Conditions

SIOUX FALLS, SD -

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is reminding drivers to slow down as falling snow creates slick road conditions.

Between 6 a.m. and 11: 30 a.m., troopers in the Sioux Falls area and to the south were called to 14 crashes and seven motorist assists.  One crash between a semi and car on Interstate 90 east of Sioux Falls forced part of the road to be closed for a time.  It has since reopened after the debris was removed.

Lt. Paul Gerken says two patrol cars have been hit while troopers were responding to calls.  Neither trooper was hurt. 

Gerken says it's important that drivers slow down when they see vehicles in the ditch or on the shoulder.  You need to move as far away as you can and always give extra room to emergency vehicles.

A winter weather advisory is in effect for Mitchell, Sioux Falls, Yankton, Worthington and Sheldon, Iowa.  Snow is likely in most areas of KELOLAND but will be the heaviest where the advisory is in place.  Snow totals of 2" to 5" are forecast in the advisory area, with 1' to 3" likely in Aberdeen, Watertown and Pierre.  Snow won't be as heavy in Rapid City, but an inch is possible.
