Snoring Remedies

Just about everyone snores occasionally, but if it becomes a regular habit it can affect how much you sleep.

Snoring can also lead to poor sleep and leave you feeling restless during the day.

Couldn't sleep at night, couldn't breathe at night I would actually stop breathing many times at night. 

Like many of us, Jerry Jongeling has been battling with sleep problems. For a while, he wasn't sure the cause.

"For years, I thought it was just common work stress. I wasn't able to sleep. I was tired in the morning and I was restless at night," Jongeling said.

Those restless nights made it difficult for him to stay productive at work during the day.

“I would sit at my desk and just fall asleep, trying to read a paper and I would just fall asleep. I was healthy and eating healthy and I was working out,” Jongeling said.

Turns out he had a severe condition of sleep apnea.

"It took a little time to sink in because I am younger and healthier and I didn't think I would have any medical condition or any medical issues,"

"We are finding that people with poor quality of sleep we are having significant things like even increased rate of accidents, very serious things that can impact their life as well as their families," Dr. Kenneth Scott

Ear, nose and throat specialist Dr. Kenneth Scott says, more than 10 percent of people suffer from sleep-related problems.

"Snoring is so common and obviously it can mean something more severe. It's a continuum so meaning sometimes it can be so severe it's sleep apnea sometimes it's just social bother," Dr. Scott said.

The different ways health experts recommend to treat snoring include lifestyle changes, surgery and dental appliances.

Jongeling admits to snoring but uses a CPAP to help him sleep. It's made a significant difference with his sleep apnea.

“I wake up and I'm ready to go. I used to wake up groggy but now I am ready to go,” Jongeling said.

Jongeling visits the doctor every six months to make he's on track with a healthier sleeping pattern.

Some common causes of snoring include, age, nasal and sinus problems, being overweight, alcohol and smoking, as well as your sleep posture.
