SMSU's Matthews Named NSIC Offensive POTW
BURNSVILLE, MN -

Southwest Minnesota State University senior running back Warren Matthews has been named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Offensive Player of the Week for his performance in SMSU’s 40-24 victory over Wayne State on Saturday night.

The announcement came Monday morning from the NSIC office in Burnsville, Minn.

Matthews, a 5-foot-9, 188-pound, native of Minneapolis, rushed for 157 yards and one touchdown on 22 carries and also caught a 72-yard touchdown pass during the victory.  Matthews had two kickoff returns for 28 total yards and one punt return for eight yards to finish the game with 258 all-purpose yards.

Matthews, a 2008 graduate of Richfield High School, has rushed for a team-high 535 yards and three touchdowns on 80 carries this season with 11 receptions for 186 yards two touchdowns.

For his career, Matthews has rushed for 1,916 yards, ranking sixth in school history, on 328 attempts with 12 touchdowns.  He also has 50 career receptions or 559 yards and five touchdowns.

SMSU, 2-4 NSIC, 1-1 NSIC South, will play at No. 10 Minnesota State, Mankato on Saturday with kickoff slated for 2 p.m.
