Smokejumpers Join Fire Battle For First Time

Smokejumpers Join Fire Battle For First Time
HOT SPRINGS, SD -

For the first time ever, smokejumpers have joined in on a wildfire battle in the Black Hills National Forest on the South Dakota side.

They jumped into the Parker Peak Fire Tuesday morning, which has steep and rough terrain, as a Northern Rockies Type II Incident team took over command.

Lightning started the fire west of Hot Springs Sunday.  It has since spread to about 1,000 acres.  It's threatening five structures and two outbuildings, and is 10 percent contained.

There are about 70 firefighters on the scene.

KELOLAND's Derek Olson will bring you updates on the conditions throughout the day on KELOLAND News and KELOLAND.com.
