The investigation continues in Rapid City into the illegal placement of electronic credit-card skimmers in six gas pumps in town.
Investigators believe they have found all the skimmers, for now.
The skimmers are homemade devices illegally placed inside the pumps to intercept and record credit-card data. Police aren't naming the stations where skimmers were found, believing that would be a double victimization of businesses already hit by criminals.
We would have done it if we were worried that this problem was still ongoing. We're very confident that we worked with all of the gas companies to alleviate this problem. They took the issue very seriously. And they were the ones who helped us find the grand total of six of these, Captain James Johns of the Rapid City Police said.
Stations owners now regularly check inside pumps, watch for external tampering and in some cases change locks on the pumps. Those techniques are effective, but Johns says consumers should also watch their accounts for signs of fraud.
