Sioux Falls To Acknowledge Dubious Honor

The Sioux Falls City Council has decided to preserve the city's reputation more than a century ago as a good place to get a divorce, but the decision wasn't unanimous.
The council voted 6-2 to place a historic marker downtown commemorating Sioux Falls as the "divorce capital of the nation" between 1877 and 1909, a moniker it obtained because of rules that made it easy for couples to get a divorce.
Monument supporters including Mayor Dave Munson say it's a part of Sioux Falls history.
Councilor Gerald Beninga was one of the two dissenting votes. He says it doesn't make sense to memorialize something so negative.
