Sioux Falls Summer Diabetes Camp

All summer kids have been attending camps where they're making friends, learning songs, and playing lots of games. Kids at one Sioux Falls Day Camp are also learning a lot from each other about their chronic disease called diabetes.

At this one day day camp in Sioux Falls, you'll hear a lot about insulin, blood sugar and things that are called pumps.

Sanford holds a week-long camp every year for kids with diabetes. But this camp is just one day for some of the youngest diabetics, ages 5 to 8. They're from all across South Dakota, Minnesota and Iowa. And some of these kids aren't only meeting each other for the first time, they're learning there are other kids out there just like them.

"A lot of these kids live in cities where there may be nobody else in their elementary school who has diabetes, nobody else in their town, their age, that has diabetes. So it definitely gives them a new opportunity," Dr. Alex Karmazin said.

As you saw the kids were having a lot of fun playing outside, but they also learned a lot about their disease and instead of camp counselors, the day camp is staffed with dieticians, doctors, and nurses.
