Sioux Falls Salon Considers More Security

September 12, 2012, 9:55 PM by Perry Groten

Sioux Falls Salon Considers More Security
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

A Sioux Falls hair salon is re-thinking its own safety plan in the aftermath of Amanda Connors' death.  This salon's already tight security could be getting even tighter.

The Cost Cutters shooting has sent a chill throughout Sioux Falls hair salons.

"I don't know if it necessarily doesn't make me not feel safe. But it does make me kind of wonder, anything can happen," Sola Salon stylist Amanda Breuer said.

Sola Salon has a half-dozen surveillance cameras posted in the hallway.  Customers have to buzz-in during evening appointments.  Stylists are supposed to follow an escape plan in case of an emergency.

"They're to go around and notify everybody, lock their front door and call 911 and then a phone call to myself," Sola Salon owner Steve Schoepp said.

But this week's shooting has Sola Salon looking at upgrades.  The salon wants to invite Sioux Falls police here to see if they have any suggestions on additional security measures. They also plan on contacting their corporate headquarters in Denver for ideas on how to keep employees and customers safer.

"Whether we should go in lockdown mode or whether we should have the exit out the back door, I guess that would be for them to tell us what to do," Schoepp said.

But no matter how proactive the stylists try to be, their toughest task may be coming to terms with the unthinkable.

"I think a lot of us women like to think that we can stick up for ourselves if something like that happened if it really came down to that, but would we?  Could we," Breuer said.

Sola Salon also hires a security company to make nightly checks.  The salon owner says the building's high-traffic, high-visibility location at 69th and South Minnesota is another important safety feature.
