Many in Sioux Falls take pride in the city being innovative. Now, there's a report to prove it.
Sioux Falls is listed as one of seven enterprising cities in a report commissioned by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation. Sioux Falls stands out as the smallest city on the list and that's not all.
"In some of the cases, these cities have sunk to pretty deep depths and they're earning their way back. We've never really done that. I guess our pendulum doesn't swing so very far," Tom Simmons of Forward Sioux Falls said.
The cities making the list are as follows:
- Dayton, Ohio
- Irving, Texas
- Memphis, Tennessee
- Minneapolis, Minnesota
- Salt Lake City, Utah
- San Antonio, Texas
- Sioux Falls, South Dakota
In addition to crediting Sioux Falls for record growth and low unemployment, the report says Sioux Falls is becoming more economically diverse.
"We happen to be in a city that isn't only a can do, it's a 'doing' situation. You don't have to go far in this city to see the improvements in infrastructure and the incredible growth going on," Simmons said.
The report credits government and business cooperation as another reason why Sioux Falls is so successful. Now, those who help promote what the city has to offer hope this new listing adds fuel to the already burning fire of economic strength.
"A lot of talk, a lot of articles, a lot of mentions, a lot of interest and I'm hoping a lot more curiosity to come out and see how Sioux Falls can be the right place at the right time for the right companies," Simmons said.
The author of the report says he hopes the cities who made it onto the list will serve as a "how to" for other communities across the nation.
Sioux Falls business and government leaders say they're already looking at what those six other cities do that Sioux Falls can capitalize on as well.
