Sioux Falls May Need To Hide Its Garbage Cans

Sioux Falls May Need To Hide Its Garbage Cans

Out of sight, out of mind. That could be the new policy for garbage cans in Sioux Falls on non-collection days.

Right now, homeowners are instructed to put their garbage cans in an "inconspicuous" spot. The City Council may get more specific. A new ordinance that would require residents to keep trash cans hidden inside, behind or beside a structure. This includes a house or garage.

"The positive side of all of this is less people would see garbage cans when they're driving through the city," Sioux Falls City Council member Greg Jamison said.

Jamison said he has not heard any homeowners trash talk this idea, but a few others have brought up concerns.

"It could make it more difficult for the garbage haulers. It could put them in a spot where they have liability now," Jamison said.

If the proposal passes, some haulers worry homeowners will forget to put out trash cans, or crews will have to search for the hidden cans. Frank Bernard is not opposed to the change, but he said most people on his route only put cans out on collection days.

"If they don't have it out, then we hit a button that says it's not out, and we go on to the next customer," Bernard said.

Jamison brought up a few other points. He said this proposed changed may be difficult for apartments or townhomes, which have limited space, or may not have garages. He also said this may be hard to enforce, because different haulers collect on different days. This may create some confusion when it comes to knowing which garbage cans are supposed to be outside.

City Council first looked at the proposal on Tuesday night, and will weigh the pros and cons before making a decision.  Homeowner Jennifer Condron said the change could make her life easier.

"Some clarity is good. So that we all know when there's not any ambiguity and we won't get confused. Personally, I think hiding them is not a bad idea," Condron said.
