A Sioux Falls man was arrested early Sunday morning after robbing a downtown shop and leading police on a short pursuit in the city.
Public Information Officer Sam Clemens said around 2 a.m. Sunday, the clerk at Romantix on Dakota Avenue asked a man inside the store to leave because it was closing time. He refused, grabbed the clerk by the neck and started squeezing. Clemens says at some point, the suspect took some cash and DVDs from the store and then left.
But the suspect came back inside the store, hitting the clerk in the back of the neck with a metal display shelf. The clerk was able to get a good look of the suspect and a vehicle description to give to police.
A half hour later, Clemens says police caught up with the suspect, 57-year-old Daniel Herbert Johnikin. After a short pursuit, Johnikin crashed the vehicle he was driving and ran from the scene. Police found him in the bushes nearby.
He was arrested on several charges including aggregated assault, second degree robbery and eluding. Johnikin was also arrested on drug possession charges because police found meth residue in the car.
