The Sioux Falls Area Humane Society is dangerously close to running out of canned dog food. This comes after several calls for help this year to help the non-profit feed the growing number of animals coming to the shelter.
At the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society, three-year-old Landon has his eye on a new puppy. But what he doesn't know is the big problem caused by so many puppies coming to the shelter.
With nearly 300 animals in their care, Alma Sehovic says they're desperately low on canned food for both dogs and cats.
While they've received ample donations on bagged food, the lack of wet food has them high and dry.
"We're getting more puppies and kittens in, so you just never know how many litters you get at one time. You never know what the public is going to bring in at once," Sehovic said.
The non-profit relies entirely on public donations to feed the animals. Over the last several months, the supply reaches critical levels.
And while the humane society does have several food drives every year, the reason they keep running out of food is because of the unpredictable number of animals coming into the shelter.
"There is not one day that goes by that people don't leave animals while we're closed or leave them all throughout the workday," Sehovic said.
Up to 80 percent of animals come to the shelter from homes who didn't want them anymore.
To help house the increase, the shelter is in the midst of a multi-million dollar expansion. And the lack of responsible pet owners upsets Landon's dad, Dustin Kooima.
"If you play with them, you have to be there for them," Kooima said. "If you get one just to have something in the house when you come home, you're doing it for the wrong reason."
The Sioux Falls Area Humane Society is asking for any canned dog or cat food, as long as it’s not recalled.
The shelter is located on 3720 E. Benson Road, Sioux Falls, SD.
