Sioux Falls Drivers Eat Meals By The Miles

December 6, 2012, 9:55 PM by Perry Groten

Sioux Falls Drivers Eat Meals By The Miles
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

With all the nationwide attention the town of Huron is receiving over its ban on eating-while-driving, we decided to find out what's on the mobile menu in Sioux Falls.

We went in search of dining drivers on one of South Dakota's busiest intersections.

At 41st Street and Minnesota Avenue, you'll spot traveling texters, a mascara motorcade and snacking behind the steering wheel. That's a regular three-course banquet of distracted driving.

"I see people eating pizza all the time, chips. I see people doing all kinds of things driving," Steve Timoteo of Sioux Falls said.

We found Timoteo with a smorgasbord on board.

"I was just eating some pizza earlier and I got some noodles here, I like cooking and I eat them on the road," Timoteo said.

Timoteo knows first-hand about the dangers of distracted driving. He was once thrown from a vehicle.

"Texting and driving, hit a ditch and flipped a car a couple of times," Timoteo said.

But drivers say busy schedules force them to eat a la car.

"You can use your knee to drive and then you kind of look down.  Use your knee to drive, mainly if you got to use both hands," Timoteo said.

But technology really can't make eating while driving safer.  After all, there's no such thing as hands-free food.

Perry: Here, have some chips.
Timoteo: All right, thank you, appreciate it.  Those are pretty good chips.

Another driver told us the degree of danger varies depending upon whether the food being eaten requires one hand or two.
