Sioux Falls Diver Dead After Training Exercise

A Sioux Falls diver injured in a training exercise on Thursday died Sunday night.

43-year-old Jeff Alan Thumma, of Sioux Falls, died Sunday night from injuries sustained during a diving exercise at Family Park. Thumma was a volunteer with the Minnehaha County Emergency Management Dive Team.

Eleven divers and Sioux Falls Fire Rescue were in the middle of rescue training with dummies in the water at Family Park. Thumma was underwater for about two minutes before he was found. According to officials, Thumma pulled on a rope four times to indicate he was experiencing a problem.

Sioux Falls Police are investigating the incident.
