Sioux Falls Deals With Storm Damage

June 11, 2010, 6:03 PM by Erica Johnson

Sioux Falls Deals With Storm Damage
SIOUX FALLS, SD - Strong storms caused some major damage in parts of Sioux Falls overnight. From downed power lines to trees falling on houses and windows being blown out, homeowners and crews have been working all day to get things cleaned up.

It wasn't a tree limb or flying debris that shattered this glass window at Mike Juhl Auto Sports overnight, but the wind. The business is out near the airport in Sioux Falls where there's not much shelter and the storm left them with some major clean up.

“When we drove in to town we could see all kinds of damage with trees down and not expecting anything in our store. Once we got in there was glass everywhere, ceiling tiles blown all over the place. It was a huge mess,” Debi Juhl said.

Just down their lot, a power line pole snapped off leaving live wires on the ground. This morning crews were working to put it back up.

As the storm moved farther into Sioux Falls, it took down some large trees, splitting them right down the middle and pulling up the roots.

A tree on Holly Avenue blocked the road and Pat Hansen's driveway.

“I went to get my paper and whoa, what is this?” Hansen said.

While Hansen heard the storm, she says in the 37 years she's lived in this neighborhood, they've never had a tree fall, especially one this size.

“I didn't know how much went down, gosh,” Hansen said.

While the rains and winds have subsided, the clean up and repair work are just beginning.
