Sioux Falls Campground Gets Alcohol License

May 14, 2013, 5:53 PM by Shawn Neisteadt

Sioux Falls Campground Gets Alcohol License
NEAR BRANDON, SD -

Hot days get many across KELOLAND thinking about summertime activities like camping. And for many, a hot day at the campground calls for a cold beer.

"We like to have a cocktail while sitting by the fireplace," camper Lori Schnell said.

But up until now, campers like Schnell, would have to bring their own beer to the Yogi Bear Campground. That will now change.

Minnehaha County Commissioners voted unanimously to approve the on and off sale license for the grounds. Nobody spoke up against the plan that the campground's owner says will promote responsibility.

"They decide that they ran out of beer, they need some beer, they'll come up to the store and ask if I sell beer and unfortunately I don't sell beer. Then I see them get in their car, go and leave to go get some more beverages. We're hoping we can stop some of that," Bruce Aljets said.

In all, between county and state licensing fees, the campground will have about $500 in expenses for the new license.

The approval means the campground will now move forward with plans to build a tiki bar where the beer and food will be served.

"We're kind of like farmers. You've got to make hay when the sun shines. Camping is a six month a year business, at best, that's a small window to make our revenue; so we look at ways to expand every chance we can," Aljets said.

And for campers, it will be one more convenience while they "rough it" away from home.

"You go to the gas station anyway to get beer. It will save you a trip," Schnell said.

The license also allows the campground to carry South Dakota wine.
