Sioux Falls Airport Offers Quicker Security Line For Travelers

Sioux Falls Airport Offers Quicker Security Line For Travelers

The Sioux Falls Regional Airport opened a new line at the security checkpoint that should help holiday travelers.

The expedited screening program offers pre-approved travelers to leave on shoes and belts as well as leave their laptop in its bag through the security checkpoint. While this new perk will help passengers get to their plane, it's a benefit that travelers won't enjoy every time.

If you hear three beeps when you scan your boarding pass, you're approved to go through the TSA PreCheck line. This new security line gets you from check-in to your plane faster.

"We believe it would save a lot of time for those passengers in the PreCheck lane because they have less to divest and it's a much simpler process as far as their screening of their property and their persons," Federal Security Director Mark Heisey said.

Frequent Fliers of United, Delta and American are approved for the quicker security lane at the Sioux Falls Airport. Other travelers can be approved once their information from their flight reservation is matched against the Secure Flight Watchlist. But even if you get to use the PreCheck line for one flight, it's not a guarantee that you will get the perk your next trip to the airport.

"We're trying to identify the peak times of days to have this available so it's not necessarily available every hour the checkpoint is open. So there could be sometimes where one trip you go through and you qualify to be a PreCheck passenger and maybe the next time you don't.  So there could be some confusion over time," Sioux Falls Regional Airport Executive Director Dan Letellier said.

Nancy Hospers -- who is on her way to Grand Rapids, Michigan -- is one of Tuesday's lucky passengers.  It's her first time using the benefit, and she hopes to see it in more airports.

"It would be great. I think it would make the lines move faster. It was easy to do; they were very helpful," Hospers said.

And travelers aren't the only ones enjoying the change of pace.

"Well if we have happy travelers, the airport benefits. We want to make the experience as easy for people flying out Sioux Falls, and this is one way to make this happen," Letellier said.

This is the first PreCheck line in South Dakota. According to the TSA, over 25 million passengers have experienced the quicker line since it launched in October of 2011.
