Singer Vocal Supporter Of Events Center Open House

August 1, 2014, 5:55 PM by Perry Groten

Singer Vocal Supporter Of Events Center Open House
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

Singer who wants to perform at Denny Sanford PREMIER Center open house says it's more about exposure than receiving a paycheck.

The soothing sounds of bluegrass echoed amid the lunchtime crowd in downtown Sioux Falls. Former Sioux Falls Fire Chief Kirk Anderson was all ears. Next month, he wants to lend his voice to the events center open house, performing with the El Riad Shrine Chanters men's chorus.

"For 25-35 minutes to go out and perform for the opening, I think it's a good thing," Anderson said.

The group is willing to forego a paycheck in exchange for the opportunity to reach new audiences.

"It's not that we would rather perform for free because we do get paid for it occasionally. But this is just an opportunity to dedicate the new events center as well as give ourselves the public exposure," Anderson said.

Within a vibrant local music scene, there's not a lot of harmony when it comes to the issue of paying musicians.

"I feel for it because I've got a couple of kids who are musicians and they all have to keep day jobs," Lowell Richards of Brandon said.

Lowell Richards thinks all the open house performers should receive at least a minimum payment for their efforts.

"Volunteer work is good, but if you're trying to make a living from it, you gotta get some reimbursement because everybody's got bills they have to pay," Richards said.

Opposite viewpoints that will play out when the events center takes center stage.

Events center management has said some performers will likely get paid. Officials say the 2-day open house in September is less about being a concert and more about showcasing the events center.
