SIOUX FALLS, SD -
"Tree the Town" is just around the corner and dozens of volunteers are still needed. But what exactly can you do to help out? We sat down with an organizer of the event to find out.
Many people have already started replanting where trees were lost in this April's ice storm. But not everyone can do that kind of physical labor. That's why the "Tree the Town" event was created.
Volunteers are still needed to plant and help prepare for the big event.
"At this point, we are still looking for helpers who can go out and visit people's homes and measure to make sure we can put the trees where the seniors are hoping to have the trees put. And we also could use some help unloading trees the day that the trees for the homes come in, which will be the Tuesday before the big event on the 26th," Sara Carothers, Volunteer Services Director for the Helpline Center, said.
To keep track of how many trees can be planted and where to send everyone, volunteers do need to register ahead of time.
"They can dial 211 and they can visit with me. A very easy way to register. Or they can go to HelplineCenter.org and they can register online there," Carothers said.
To help out on the day of the event, you don't have to be a professional in tree planting.
"We will have the mulch for them; we'll have the trees for them. We'll have their home assignments. We'll have instructions for planting, instructions to leave with the homeowner about caring for the tree. So really all they need to bring is a spade and if they want some gloves, maybe bring some gloves with," Carothers said.
And for those without a large vehicle, the trees can be transported for volunteers as well. In all, they still have about 75 trees that don't have volunteers to plant them.
"The seniors and the people who have requested those trees are so excited. They're looking forward to this day. So we really want to make sure we have enough volunteer hands to get them all in," Carothers said.
Several non-profits will be at the Washington Pavilion that day for the "Make a Difference Day" event. The American Red Cross will also be handing out hot drinks to tree planters.
