Sheriff Wants Budget Increase For More Deputies

Sheriff Wants Budget Increase For More Deputies
RAPID CITY, SD -

Pennington County Sheriff Kevin Thom says he will ask county leaders to provide him more deputies.

Thom is concerned that sheriff's office response times for calls for service have gone up along with increases in serious crimes.

The sheriff is asking the commission to increase 2014's $27.7 million budget by about $500,000. The increase would allow Thom to get close to his goal of adding about 28 positions over the next two years.

Commissioners could approve a provisional budget when they meet Tuesday. Thom says is working closely with commissioners to improve public safety while helping the commission control a growing budget.
