A third suspect connected to an alleged gang rape of a 12-year-old girl in Harrisburg is in custody. Authorities have been looking for 19-year-old Obadia Loyira for nearly nine months, but in the end, the man went to them. Lincoln County Sheriff Dennis Johnson said Loyira walked into the Minnehaha County Jail on Wednesday to pay a child support warrant. Workers checked his background, and found he was wanted in Lincoln for the January rape.
"Hopefully when it's all said and done, the victim and their family will have some satisfaction and closure," Johnson said.
Authorities say the 12-year-old victim said Loyira took her to a Harrisburg home on January 15, raped her and then took pictures with his cell phone. Documents show Loyira admitted he had sex with the girl, but at the time investigators were still trying to piece the case together and did not arrest him.
"We had various reports of sightings, which we followed up on everyone. I mean, we certainly believe he had some assistance while he was out and about," Johnson said.
Two other suspects in the case have already been arrested. 20-year-old Elizio Kalimba of Sioux Falls is awaiting trail and currently in the Minnehaha County Jail. A case against a 16-year-old Iowa boy has already been resolved in juvenile court. Johnson said at one point investigators believed Loyira was in Des Moines. Authorities did find his cell phone number, but the pre-paid phone provider did not give a location or helpful details. As the case moves forward, Johnson is glad to finally have some answers.
"We always want to keep people safe, you know. Sometimes through investigations, people don't get picked up right away and are out on the loose sometimes, and of course that's never a good thing. But, you know, in this case, now that he's in custody, we're obviously quite pleased about that," Johnson said.
Loyira is being held on a more than $50,000 cash bond. He'll be in court October 28.
