Share Your Love While Feeding A Hungry Child This Valentine's Day

February 6, 2014, 4:59 PM by Hailey Higgins

Share Your Love While Feeding A Hungry Child This Valentine's Day
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

Demand for Feeding South Dakota's Backpack Program continues to surpass record levels and the non-profit struggles to keep up with the need.

But next week, you can share your love to your valentine while feeding a hungry child for an entire semester.

Thousands of food insecure students in the Sioux Falls area rely on a weekly sack of food for nourishment over the weekend.

Feeding South Dakota's Backpack Coordinator says the number of students continues to climb higher than expectations.

"This year has been a record year for us already and we still have three months left of the Backpack Program," Struck said. "Last night we filled 3,578 backpacks which is 200 more than we were doing in February of last year, so we continue to see the need."

To raise additional funds to serve children this semester, the non-profit is launching the Share Your Love promotion.

For $75, you can provide one weekend food package to a child every week for a semester. And that's not all.  With this donation, Feeding South Dakota will deliver a rose to someone you love in Sioux Falls and also provide a Valentine's Day card from a child.

"Even if we could make up some of that gap through this promotion, it would be an incredible result for us," DeGraff said.

And with the growing need every year, Feeding South Dakota spends more than $500,000 on food for the Backpack Program, and right now, organizers say they need more.

"School administrators reach out to us and say, can we add this kid to the list, it's really difficult to say no, we can't do it. So that's where we have to kind of look at how we can be creative to continue to grow our fundraising base because that is not always the easiest thing to do," DeGraff said.

"We are just doing our best to meet the need. We do the best we can with the resources we have," Struck said.
