Residents of Shannon County will vote in November on whether to change the name to Oglala Lakota County.
Auditor Sue Ganje says supporters of a change have gathered enough petition signatures to put the matter on the November general election ballot.
The county makes up the majority of the land on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. It's named after Peter Shannon, a chief justice of the Dakota Territory Supreme Court who later helped negotiate land deals with the Lakota.
County Commissioner Anna Takes The Shield says the county's name should reflect the people who live in it.
