SF Trooper Still Critical, Woman Faces Charges

October 19, 2012, 6:03 PM by Brady Mallory

SF Trooper Still Critical, Woman Faces Charges
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

25-year-old Rachel Coleman is facing multiple charges, including attempted murder in the first degree, felony hit and run, multiple aggravated assault charges on law enforcement and her fourth DWI after she led authorities on chase through Sioux Falls and ran over a state trooper.

According to court paperwork, 34-year-old Trooper Andrew Steen saw Coleman sit through a green light and then cross the center line in her Chevy Malibu in western Sioux Falls early Wednesday morning. Steen tried to stop her, but Coleman kept going.  She led him through an apartment complex parking lot on St. James Drive and then to the parking lot of the Empire Mall. Then she went to 57th Street and Western Avenue. Authorities tried to stop Coleman's car in the parking lot of a strip mall there, but she hit their cars including the front and rear panels of Steen's car.

These documents list Coleman's boyfriend as having told authorities he and the 25-year-old woman had been drinking at a bar Tuesday night. He left, but Coleman stayed.  A witness claimed Coleman had been drinking beer and had at least three shots.

By Wednesday morning, she led law enforcement, including Trooper Steen, on a chase that went through several parts of Sioux Falls.

The chase came to a halt in a strip mall parking lot at 57th Street and Western Avenue. The documents list Coleman hitting several patrol cars, including Steen's car.  Steen got out and Coleman almost hit him.  He fired his gun, but she kept driving and crashed into a store called David Jones.

Authorities said as Coleman backed out, another trooper drove her car behind Coleman's to stop her.  The two cars collided.

Steen walked in front of Coleman's car and pointed his gun at the windshield and told her to get out of the car. Coleman drove toward him and Steen fired his gun at her car. She was going fast enough that she left tire marks on the pavement. She hit Steen with her car, while Lincoln County deputies fired their guns.

At some point, Coleman was shot, though the paperwork does not list where or how many times.

After she ran Steen over, court documents claim she drove toward a Lincoln County Deputy as she was attempting to get away.  At 47th Street and Western Avenue, she got out of her car and tried to run away before she was arrested.

Officials said her breath smelled strongly of alcohol.

According to the paperwork, Coleman has had three DWI's in the last few years, a careless driving charge and driving with a revoked license.

The documents also give us a better idea of how serious Steen's head injury is because after he was hit he was not able to speak or communicate in any way.

Steen is still in critical condition, despite having had successful brain surgery.

Coleman likely has not been arrested yet, because the Minnehaha County State's Attorney Aaron McGowan said they do not typically arrest suspects if they are going to be in the hospital for a while.
