SF Storm Staying In Indoor Football League

August 15, 2012, 10:14 PM by Matt Holsen

SF Storm Staying In Indoor Football League
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

The Sioux Falls Storm is staying in the Indoor Football League.

Despite a rocky past with some of the competing teams, Storm owner Todd Tryon says his franchise will stick with the IFL and with Head Coach Kurtiss Riggs agreeing to a two-year extension, it's all-systems go once again.

With no real good alternatives as far as switching leagues, Storm owner Todd Tryon committed his franchise's upcoming season to the IFL on Wednesday. He says if the team would have dropped down a level; there would have been no fooling the Storm faithful.

"They would notice the quality of talent on the field. They would notice the mismatched uniforms as they showed up. If the teams even showed up. We had to go what we felt was the best demographic and what we felt was the best competition and despite some things that have gone on, it's the best run league," Tryon said.

So the ‘best run’ league will have its best team back in its ranks. And that team will have its coach.

Riggs has led the Storm for ten seasons capturing a national championship six times while compiling a record of 140-28.

On Wednesday Riggs signed a two-year extension after many, including himself, thought he was giving it up.

"At the end of the year I really thought that this wouldn't happen. I thought we were ready to make a move in a different direction. My family and I took some time away and as we kind of got away from everything, even as we got back into Sioux Falls, we had a lot of people approach us," Riggs said.

After weighing the pros and cons, Riggs decided getting back in the saddle was the right decision. It also helped that the team owner made his extension a top priority.

"You know, Kurtiss, it's always fun negotiating. This is my second time around negotiating a contract with him but at the end of the day, he was a must have. He was a must sign as we're trying to continue this franchise,” Tryon said.

Now comes the important task of resigning key players.

If you remember Tryon released almost his entire roster last month including star quarterback and reigning MVP Chris Dixon.

Riggs says Dixon will be the first person he calls and he might not even need to pick up a phone. Both Riggs and Dixon have sons that play on the same junior football team.
