SF Shoveling vs. Plowing Policies

February 12, 2013, 4:57 PM by Brady Mallory

SF Shoveling vs. Plowing Policies
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

All those bumps and ruts on the roads will stick around for awhile because the city does not plan to send out the plows in residential areas.  You still have to make sure your sidewalks are clean and clear before a deadline, or it will cost you to have city workers remove it for you.  This raises a few questions from some of our viewers.

Homeowner Keith McCauley wanted to know why there is not a deadline for plowing residential streets.

"It's not really fair if you look at it.  You have to shovel the snow, but they don't have to shovel the road.  What's good for one should be good for the other," McCauley said.

McCauley was using a shovel, salt and even a small axe to remove the inches of ice from his sidewalk.  The sidewalks are pretty iced over, but if you step on to a street, you will find the same conditions.

We drove on some of these icy streets, and our KELOLAND cameras show a very bumpy ride at rut-filled intersections.  Residential streets have been like this for a few days now. Mayor Mike Huether said there is no reason to complain.

"I mean, come on folks.  We had the emergency and the secondary roads of Sioux Falls cleaned within 24 hours of this snowfall.  We should be celebrating our public works team," Huether said.

Plows laid down a salt and sand mixture on residential streets several times since the weekend.  Huether said the city does not plow residentials unless there is a snow alert because there is not enough snow for plowing to be cost effective.  When it comes to clearing sidewalks, city officials sent out two releases.  One said you had until 2 p.m. on Tuesday.  The other said the deadline is on Thursday at 2 p.m.  Huether said there was a miscommunication, and that is why there were two releases.  The real date is on Thursday.

"We have a responsibility as a city government to let people know what is that time frame and how we can work with you," Huether said.

Darren Tornow hurried home during his lunch break to chip away ice.  He said that is his responsibility as a homeowner.

"I do think it would've been a waste of money for the city to plow because it wouldn't have done anything.  It's so wet and slushy.  Just moved to the side and came back up," Tornow said.
