Legislators in Pierre this year debated the issue of public school start dates. On Monday, the Sioux Falls School Board addressed the issue as well.
The board voted to approve the school calendars for the next three years, all of them including a start date before Labor Day. A bill passed by the legislature says parents have the ability to petition and change the start date if enough signatures are gathered.
"In the end, we have to make the decision that we feel is in the best interest of the largest number of students that we serve, and I believe we have done that over and over again as we've had these conversations." Sioux Falls School Board Vice-President Ken Alberty said.
State Representative Christine Erickson spoke to the school board during their meeting Monday and urged board members to start school one week later than their original plan, but they approved the calendars with no changes. That means the 2014/2015 school year will begin on Monday, August 18th.
