School is cut short for nearly 500 Sioux Falls students Wednesday afternoon. Cleveland Elementary is dealing with a broken air conditioner and above average temperatures.
Tuesday, two compressors went out in the school's main air conditioning system causing temperatures inside most classrooms to soar into the upper 80's.
And while it wasn't as bad Wednesday, Cleveland administration didn't want to take any chances.
At 1 p.m. sharp, Nicole Maunu is at Cleveland Elementary School to pick up her kindergartener.
"It's too hot," Maunu said. "The weather is just way too humid."
"I know how hot the girls were saying they were yesterday, so when they heard they were having school until 1:00 p.m. because it was hot, they were thrilled," Tammy Armitage said, mother of three school-age children.
Principal Anne Williams says the lack of air conditioning couldn't come at a worse time.
"The heat index is still pretty high and again, when you're in a brick building we just don't get to cool down very much," Williams said.
To help cool the school, the district has provided 40 fans to help circulate the air. But even with a breeze, the thermostat is still in the low to mid 80's.
"Based on the forecast for today, we felt we needed a 1 o'clock dismissal so our students could be comfortable. It was very uncomfortable yesterday, especially on our second floor," Williams said.
While it is just the third day of classes, the parents I spoke with say they're happy the school let out early.
"Thank God the sun is not shining or it would be ungodly hot," Armitage said. "So it's better safe than sorry."
"Especially if it is hot and only half the air conditioning is running, I would agree to that to let them go," Maunu said.
The school district is waiting for parts before they can fix the air conditioning and that's not expected to happen before early next week.
In the meantime, administration is keeping a close eye on the temperatures and with Thursday’s cool down; they do not expect an early release.
Although it sounds like it could be a much different situation early next week.
