A Sioux Falls native who currently lives in Aurora, Colorado, says while there are bad parts of town, the movie theater where Friday's massacre occurred isn't one of them.
25-year-old Logan Smith grew up in Sioux Falls and graduated from Washington High School. He moved to Aurora last year and says it's just like any other big city suburb. And he says he's not shaken by what happened last week.
Smith was visiting his parents last week when he heard about the midnight showing massacre in Aurora. It's a theater five minutes away from where he lives.
"I go to that movie theater probably two days a week to watch different movies," Smith said. "So, it's kind of a weird experience."
Watching the news from afar, Smith wondered what was going on and if any of his friends were caught in the crossfire.
"My roommate could have been there with his girlfriend," Smith said. "I got so many texts from everybody like, 'Are you okay? Are you okay?'"
Smith reassured his friends that he wasn't at the movie. Now, as he looks back on it, he doesn't believe the crime is indicative of Aurora itself.
"I feel like it could just happen anywhere, not just that particular theater," Smith said. "I don't think he picked that theater; I think he just picked it because it was close."
And Smith's two movie per week habit will continue as soon as he returns home this week.
"I'll probably be the first person at the theater when it opens," Smith said.
Smith says had he been in Aurora on Friday, he would not have gone to the midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises simply because he works night shifts at his job.
