SF Mayor Has No Concerns About Special Election

September 15, 2011, 10:00 PM by Ben Dunsmoor

SF Mayor Has No Concerns About Special Election
SIOUX FALLS, SD - Mayor Mike Huether says he has no concerns about holding a special events center election in less than two months without a city clerk.

The mayor shared those thoughts on Thursday, the day after City Clerk Debra Owen was fired by the council.

As city clerk, Owen has been in charge of city elections for nearly six years. And now before what's being called one of the most important elections in Sioux Falls history, the city has just fired its clerk.

"I have concerns of we've got more work to do to get the word out about the events center topic, and how we believe it will impact the city. In terms of the election itself, no, I don't have any concerns. We've been doing elections for years and years and years in this town and they weren't all based on one individual person's track record," Huether said.

Huether says there are several other employees in city government who can run a city election and he's confident in their abilities.

"Whether you're in corporate America, or a small family business, or a family, it's not just one person that controls all the good things that are going to happen," Huether said.

And he's also confident the council will handle the situation professionally.

"In this case the city council they've been very prudent in their action. They'll devise a plan to make sure the city clerk’s office runs effectively, as well as things like a special election are handled with the greatest of care," Huether said.

The special events center election is scheduled for November 8.
