Sioux Falls Police officers are given the duty to serve and protect members of the community, no matter its size.
"We say it time and time again that Sioux Falls is a safe community, especially compared to other cities our size or bigger, but we do have crime in Sioux Falls, so we want to let people know about that," officer Sam Clemens said.
Each year, the department releases their statistics on crimes committed in the city. When it comes to the more violent ones, 2014 is consistent with the data from previous years.
"So far this year, the number of calls officers are going to seems to be up a little bit compared to last year, but we seem to be on track for what we hit the last couple of years," Clemens said.
In 2012, there were 263 reported aggravated assaults, 153 cases of rape and three homicides.
For 2013, the numbers remained steady with 256 calls for aggravated assault, 142 cases of rape and three homicides.
In the first quarter of this year, there are 82 reported aggravated assaults, 42 cases of rape, and two homicides.
"It's weird to hear because I know there was a 56-year-old murdered, that woman, a while ago, and I went to school with her son, so that's weird to hear in the same month," Makayla Travnicek said.
While it is unusual to have homicide investigations so close together, it's hard to predict when a case will happen.
"They seem to space themselves out, so we don't have one right on top of another, but we can go months and months without having one. We've had single digits for quite a few years," Clemens said.
The population growth for Sioux Falls is continuous, adding thousands each year. The number of violent crimes may not directly connect to the population growth, but one crime does."
"The larcenies are probably the ones that have grown with the population. Larcenies, it's a smaller crime, it's not a serious felony, a lot of those things are just crimes of opportunity," Clemens said.
Even with the recent homicide investigations, Clemens says a look at the numbers shows that Sioux Falls remains a safe city.
