SF Area Humane Society Needs Donations

August 6, 2009, 5:51 PM by Courtney Zieller

SF Area Humane Society Needs Donations
The Sioux Falls Area Humane Society is seeing more than double the animals it's used to and it's taking a hit on the food room.

The newest addition to the Humane Society is a kitten someone dropped it off late last night.

"One more kitten to add to the mix," Julia Hoefert said.

And along with this kitten, there are more than 150 others in need of good homes.

"Everyday we get new kittens.  We get more kittens.  We get mom's with kittens," Hoefert said.

Usually the organization has around 60 cats and kittens but more surrenders are coming in because of the economy.

"We are still feeling that economic crunch where people are just not able to afford to keep their pets," Hoefert said.
Also, cat season is still underway.

"It's the time when all the mama cats that haven't gotten spayed to have their kittens and that continues throughout the summer and a lot end up here," Hoefert said.

It's taking a toll on the food room.  The supply room is running low. The bags of kitten chow will only last about another week so officials are asking for your help.

"They go through a lot of food in a week," Hoefert said.

And with so many animals, workers have turned their volunteer lounge into a place to house cats.  Even giving a little can help a lot.

"Every little bit the community can help us with is very much appreciated," Hoefert said.

You can help by donating kitten or cat chow or by giving a monetary donation.

The Humane Society's dog numbers are also up.  They're also accepting Puppy and Dog chow. You can drop off your donation at the organization.
